DIY Remineralizing Toothpaste

Keep the dentist at bay...

It has been shown in research that individuals who consume large amounts of phytic acid (most Americans) in the form of grains, seeds, nuts, and legumes have higher rates of tooth decay, mineral deficiencies and osteoporosis than people who follow a traditional diet high in digestible vitamins, minerals and good fat. Thankfully, teeth and bones are able to heal themselves in a process called remineralization. Simplified, specialized cells in the center of the tooth are able to regenerate dentin, the layer of tooth just under the enamel, and the enamel can then properly remineralize from the outside. This same process happens in bones when phytic acid is removed from the diet and minerals/fat soluble vitamins are added. Much of this research is based on the studies of Dr. Weston A. Price, a dentist who traveled and studied isolated populations around the world and their native diets.

A simple way to help remineralize teeth is to change what is used to brush them.  Here is a very cost-effective recipe filled with ingredients that aid in strengthening teeth naturally! As an added bonus, after using my new toothpaste for one month, I noticed that my teeth were whiter than they had ever been in the past!

Remineralizing Toothpaste:

  • 5 tbs coconut oil
  • 2 tbs sesame oil
  • 4 tsp bentonite clay (amazon or health food store)
  • 4 tsp calcium magnesium powder (amazon or health food store)
  • 3 tbs baking soda
  • 10-20 drops essential oils (I used peppermint, but myrrh or cloves may also be used)
  • 10 drops trace minerals (amazon or health food store)
  • liquid stevia (if desired for sweetness; recommended for children)

Heat stove to medium-low. Place coconut oil in a glass jar and set jar in a pot filled with 1 inch of water. After the coconut oil is melted, remove the jar from the pot and set it on the counter. Next, add all of the other ingredients using a wooden or plastic spoon (metal utensils will interfere with the clay). Stir until combined. The consistency will be liquid, but will harden into a thicker paste once it cools. Place jar into the fridge to set, stirring every five minutes for best consistency. Remove after thickened (around 20 minutes). Paste may be stored at room temperature, but when temperatures rise, it may need to go back in the refrigerator to solidify again. Enjoy stronger, cleaner, whiter teeth in no time!
